BLACK SABBATH

Image
Black Sabbath  is an English  heavy metal  band formed in 1968 in Birmingham, West Midlands, England, United Kingdom, originally comprising  Ozzy Osbourne  (vocals),  Tony Iommi  (guitar), Geezer Butler  (bass), and  Bill Ward  (drums). In the early 1970s they were the first to pair heavily distorted, sonically dissonant blues-rock at slow speeds with lyrics about drugs, mental pain, and abominations of war, thus giving birth to generations of metal bands that followed in their wake. They are often credited with creating the  heavy metal  genre as well as the  doom metal  subgenre. Black Sabbath was formed in Aston, a poor district of Birmingham damaged by bombing during World War II, under the name Polka Tulk Blues Band (soon shortened to “Polka Tulk”), later Earth. Initially a blues-rock band, Earth moved in a darker direction when the band, especially bassist Geezer Butler, being fans of the black magic novels of Dennis Wheatley, tried to make music to have the same effect as a ho

SONIC YOUTH

Sonic Youth  was an influential  experimrental rock  band which formed in New York City, New York, United States in 1981 and are currently on an indefinite hiatus. The last lineup consisted of  Thurston Moore  (vocals, guitar),  Kim Gordon  (vocals, bass, guitar),  Lee Ranaldo  (vocals and guitar), Steve Shelley (drums) and Mark Ibold (bass). In their early career, Sonic Youth was associated with the  no wave  art and music scene in New York City. Part of the first wave of American noise rock groups, the band carried out their interpretation of the hardcore punk ethos throughout the evolving American underground that focused more on the DIY ethic of the genre rather than its specific sound. As a result, Sonic Youth was pivotal in the rise of the alternative rock movement. Sonic Youth have expressed a wide variety of influences, ranging from the influential protopunk musician  Patti Smith  to composer  John Cage . The band has been praised for having “redefined what rock guitar coul

TAIHITI 80

Formed by multi instrumentalists Xavier Boyer, Médéric Gontier, Sylvain Marchand & Pedro Resende, Tahiti 80 ’s adventure began in the French cities of Rouen and Paris in the mid 90s. Singer/ guitarist Boyer and bassist Resende formed the pop combo as students at the University of Rouen, sharing an affinity for indie music, new wave and sixties pop.  Taking their name from a souvenir t-shirt given to Boyer’s father in 1980, the duo recruited guitarist Mederic Gontier, and with the addition of drummer Sylvain Marchand a year later, the lineup was complete. The foursome released a self-produced and self-financed EP, “20 Minutes” (Bobby Records 1996) which resulted in them signing a deal with French label Atmospheriques.   In 1998, the band flew to NYC to record their first album “Puzzle” with Andy Chase. Featuring contributions from Eric Matthews and Adam Schlesinger, “Puzzle” was mixed in Sweden with Tore Johansson. The record, released between the end of 1999 & early 2000 r

MASTODON

Image
Atlanta, Georgia (1999 – present) Mastodon is an American sludge metal/progressive metal band from Atlanta, Georgia, formed in 1999. The band comprises bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor.  They have released five full-length albums to date, expanding their musical borders from early raw sludgy riffs to later psychedelic multi-layered songs, yet maintaining progressive style with unusual time signatures and odd instrumentation. It was announced, in late 2005, that, having fulfilled contractual obligations to indie label, relapse records, Mastodon had been offered a deal by a major music label, a spot on the Warner Music roster alongside such bands as Green Day and My Chemical Romance.  Despite this, however, relapse records released a DVD, and re-released the band’s only demo. An album titled Call of the Mastodon, comprising the material recorded for the band’s first and only untitled demo,

FUNKALISTER

Image
The third album of Funkalister has arrived! On the two previous studio albums ( Vol.1 & Vol.2 ) the identity of the ensemble was heavily influenced by 70’s classic funk and soul music, but now, with this brand new release, Vol.3 , the group decided to take a step further and created a mix of sounds very well seasoned and spiced, showing maturity and great music skills. The first track “Voando Alto 1” sounds like a 1940’s era big band with a funky rhythm section playing a dancing shuffle. The track displays the horn section of the very well known big band The Brothers Orchestra as special guests, (both of the groups played a couple of gigs together at the Ocidente Pub previously the recordings, and let me tell you, I was there and the performance on both of them was astounding!) Imagine Maceo Parker & The All King’s Men jamming with The Orquestra Tabajara de Severino Araújo in a corner of the Bom Fim district. Great tune for starting a record. Thi
